Abundance of biodiversity

The rainforests cover less than 2% of the earth’s surface but they contain roughly 50% of the life on the planet – Most recent estimates suggest 15 million species. As such the rainforests are an abundance of biodiversity, such as plants, insects, animals, fish, birds, frogs, fungus and other living organisms, which secure ecological processes, balance and evolution in and around the rainforest.

For instance many insects, birds and mammals are very important to the rainforests as they are necessary to pollinate trees and other plants in the forest - without the pollinators there will be no forests. Moreover the rainforests contain an abundance of products for medicinal purposes. Some estimate that as much as 25% of Western pharmaceuticals are derived from rainforest ingredients.
