What works on a political level:

  • Make illegal timber really illegal and enforce laws. Nations should make national legislation, which make it illegal to trade in wood based product originating from illegal operations in the country of origin.
  • Make binding public procurement regulations that make it impossible for public spending to support the destruction of rainforests. All public procurement should specify that only FSC timber products (or wood certified under equally high and independent standards if ever developed) can be used or delivered, starting already in the tender phase.
  • National parks are difficult to control and might not provide enough local jobs but are an important part of the needed solutions to preserve tropical rainforests.
  • Law enforcement – several countries actually have good forest protection laws, but enforcement is lacking and corruption endemic
  • Land policy reforms, which make it easier to own and control forests for sustainable usage.

Please note, that international and national political processes are very slow and the deminising forests can’t wait, so you have to act yourself.
